Ed Note          One fellow who attends the church I do says: “this part is really boring”   and I quipped: “Compared to Leviticus”  So you might want to skim the next dozen chapters or so, since of the repetition. But. realize the nature of Gods’ cleaning the land so His People can live and serve him. Compare that to the world today. Is there a country in the world where God could say, it is clean for people to worship him without being charged with worshipping and serving (those two concepts always go together in the Scriptures) Him ONly??

Chapter 11         Onward the same message. Now Joshua has renewed desire to take the land and we see him at the forefront of the battles

Chapter  12    This chapter repeats the defeat of Kings by Moses  on the east side of the Jordan. This territory given to the 2 and 1/2 tribes that liked that side of the Dead Sea. Here in this passage named “The Salt Sea”.

Chapter 13    Lands still to be conquered

Chapter 9

Gibeonite Deception
People do not consult the Lord
Note these four cities in future battles

vs  27

Chapter   10

Sun stands still

Jerusalem alliance with 4 others against Gibeon
Joshua had to assist
sun stood still   god saying…go got you

Conquest of Southern Canaan

JOSHUA 5-8 First 2 Battles

Chapter 5

Traditional Rite of Circumcision had to be preformed on new generation of men born in wilderness, so the chapter opens with that Rite being set up again especially for the men of war

Then they kept the Passover and then could eat some of the produce of the land the day following

The manna they ate daily for 40 years while going through the wilderness, did not fall.

Right after that a man stood before Joshua to consecrate him. Take off your shoes, you are standing on holy ground.

All preparation for the first battle to capture some of the promised land.

Chapter 6

Instructions to take Jericho: March round city 7 days each day 7 times   but 7th day   quiet

Go in and rescue Rahab and her family. She spared us. we’ll spare her…

Golden Rule….Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Chapter 7

An interesting WRITING principal exists and shows up in this chapter. You’ll see it-if you’re looking for it-the next few historical books.

Vs. 1 of this chapter gives a Summary of the story that is the chapter. Then the writer goes back to the beginning

as if you’re not aware of the story.  Or one verse summarizes it, the rest of the chapter details it.  COOL!!

Israel loses the battle at  Ai
They investigate by Gods’ direction :  casting lots

Lot fell to one person who gives into temptation
Sin of Achan is

Chapter 8

Go back and capture Ai
Burn it completely
Renew the Covenant

Joshua 1-4

Chapter 1

Command comes to Joshua and the people to obey him.

Vs 8 Be Strong and Courageous  because you will lead these people to inherit the land

I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you

do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth  meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.

Then you will be prosperous and successful.

This command to Joshua: his calling card if you like, was his remembrance day call from God: His Motto

Chapter 2   This is the story of a new group of spies. They go to spy out the land and meet a harlot, Rahab. As we were studying Matthew I mentioned

that Rahab was listed in chapter 1 of Mathew in the genealogy of Jesus.

The Bible doesn’t whitewash anyone or any situation. That’s not too comfortable to people who want to be prim and proper.

That doesn’t fit their “way of life” pattern.

Chapter 3
They passed over opposite Jericho
God dried up river like Red Sea crossing

Chapter 4  This highlights the collection of stones from the middle of the Jordan

to be brought over to the land to build an altar.  A Remembrance pile of stones. These are very important

markers that their children can later remark: What do these stones mean?  God commanded us, and we obeyed

Gods’ altar of rejoicing that we made it to the promised land.

Now our task is before us to take it over as our land

First of 12 books of the Old Testament History Section

What is the phrase: If we don’t learn from history, we repeat it

Joshua is the name of the book, and the person who is the next leader of Israel as they begin to conquer the promised land

Appointed and trained by Moses, Joshua starts his leadership. Actually he and Caleb were the only two spies who in Numbers 12-14

went into the land and spied it out and returned with a favourable report

They last through the next 40 years until the doubting spies generation died off

Chapter 27 and 28

Chapter 27 is the Arrest, the Trial, The substitution

It’s all well laid out. He had to suffer, for you and I, That’s what what   THE BIG BAD FRIDAY was all about

So we are in between days. Friday the crucifixion, they laid him in the tomb

and the Sunday, the Resurrection

Without the Resurrection there is no Christian Faith.

I don’t know what you think about Christianity, but this is the heart of it. Some want to dismiss it, of course

They are influenced by modern thought, progressive, more “up to date” practical living

What : divorce, child abuse, female abuse; Christianity being kicked out in favour of idol worship of other religions

No surprise, that ‘s why in

Chapter 28   God acts

He sends the earthquake to remove the stone. He activates Himself through the Holy Spirit to raise Jesus from the dead

He surprises the women who go to embalm him with spices; the disciples to go and take a look, because the women have come

back and said, “He’s not there!”  He’s risen!!

Then as He meets with the disciples on the Sea of Galilee beach to go fishing, they recognize HIm   He gives the great Commission

Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the world.

CHAPTER  26  IS  the  plot to kill Jesus. The religious leaders have had enough

Jesus has proved He is the Messiah by his miracles he’s performed

and the teaching He’s given

The scene is set. A woman comes and anoints him . Earthly comments say : What a waste; He rebukes those who say that

He’s at the house of a leper, obviously one he’s healed, otherwise he wouldn’t be allowed in.

Judas is the Snitch
Day of Unleavened bread….this obviously is the timing of the Father

The disciples meet with Jesus and have a “last supper”. Jesus predicts Peters’ denial and it will happen

Gethsemame prayer and arrest occurs and although Jesus could have called ten thousand angels to his assistance he doesn;’t because He knows what is coming. The Crucifixion.

In verse 63  when He was accused  he kept silent. Can you rise above accusation?

The next time He comes people will bown the knee, but then it’s too late. As we said yesterday, or day before Good Friday, the Judgement will come some day

Are you ready.

Jesus knows and communicates with the Devil: You win the battle…I win war

At the end of the chapter : Peter  denies Jesus. The fulfillment of the Scripture that when the Chief Shepherd is slaughtered, the sheep will scatter.

Enjoy this singular chapter and the music, I’ve laid out for a day anticipating  THE BIG BAD FRIDAY in 2016
